Arguably one of the most popular trails in SoCal is the Escondido Falls Trail in Malibu. Some native Angelenos say you can find waterfalls there, but unless you’re going after a rainstorm (which only happens a few times a year), you may be disheartened with a small stream of water coming down on the side of a mossy mountain. Still beautiful nonetheless.

The 3.7-mile hike will take you through an easy-to-moderate trail inside of floral fields and a forested area. At the end of the trail you’ll be met with the Lower Escondido Falls. If you’re adventurous, you can go to the Upper Escondido Falls but this requires good coordination and a will to live. My friend and I tried and slipped down the side of the mountain. We made up for it by treating ourselves to nice champagne on a nearby Malibu beach.

You win some, you lose some.

Where to Park

If you’re cheap like me, you’ll risk your life and park on the side of the street in Malibu. Prepare to walk a few minutes and be mesmerized by the expensive cars whizzing by you as you near the trailhead. You’ll know you’re on the right track when you go uphill through a Malibu neighborhood, followed by a sign that reads “Escondido Canyon Park.” Voilà!

What to Wear

Happy hiking!
