There is very little that can surprise native Angelenos. A parrot on a bike? No problem. A salamander at the beach? Cool. The Husky population in the beach cities? Well, I thought huskies thrived in the winter but ok, no problem.

It’s easy to find a pet when there are so many rescue shelters and breeders around. Before you commit to your forever friend, here are 5 things to consider.

1. Understand Your Schedule

Having a pet – especially a dog – requires routine and training. Make sure you have enough time to spend time with your dog and that you get to train them to your lifestyle. It’ll likely take a few sacrifices until they adapt to your friends, socialize with other dogs, and get used to your working schedule.

2. Space

Apartments and houses in LA aren’t big and they’re not suitable for all types of pets. If you’re going to get a dog, be considerate of their size and the space you have available for them to be active in.

3. Emergency Funds

Within two months of getting my dog, she got into my medicine cabinet and ate a bunch of vitamins. I spent that night in the animal hospital to get her stomach pumped and had many blood infusions following. Make sure you have an emergency fund ready for whatever could happen, because you never know.

4. Right Reasons

Don’t get a dog because you’re lonely, get them because you want to commit to another being. It’s not always easy but it is worth it. Make sure you’re ready.

5. Remember, it’s for life!

There is nothing wrong with being a cat or dog aunt or uncle. There’s nothing wrong with volunteering at animal shelters when you’re bored or want to pet something furry. There is something wrong with committing to an animal and then abandoning them because you don’t want to take responsibility. Be intentional about the decisions you make and don’t take your bad choices out on an innocent being.

Having an animal can give you more joy than words can describe. They push you to your limits and also help you learn more about yourself than anybody ever could.

Good luck!
